WSCC Alumni Association releases fall event schedule

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — A full slate of events are on the calendar for the fall semester from the Wallace State Community College Alumni Association. The events range from an awards ceremony for outstanding alumni to classes on preparing for the ACT and how to market your business using social media. There are classes on Halloween makeup tips and how to create a holiday wreath. You can sign up for trips to find bargain buys at thrift stores or view hundreds of beautiful quilts.
The calendar of events kicks off in August with the Outstanding Alumni Awards from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Aug. 13 at the Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. The awards ceremony will be followed by an ice cream social.
Nominations for the Outstanding Alumni Award and the Promising Alumni Award will be accepted through July 15. Find more information and fill out nomination forms online at www.wsccalumni.org/outstandingalum.
The Grillin’ and Chillin’ event will round out the August calendar. The 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. event on Aug. 27. There will be food trucks, live music, games and more outdoor activities.
September’s events include a workshop to help students prepare for the ACT Test. The workshop will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 19. There is a $75 fee, which includes a workbook, or an $85 fee that includes the workbook and an accompanying CD. For more information or to register, visit www.wsccalumni.org/act. By popular demand, the Thrifty Shopper II Trip is planned for Sept. 20. The all-day trip will take participants to thrift stores around Hunstville, with a detour to the Dirt Cheap store in Madison. The trip, which includes transportation, is $25. Lunch at the historic Main Street Café in Madison will be Dutch treat, with menu prices ranging from around $5 to $10. Things will get creative in October, first with a class on Face Painting Makeup Tips for Halloween and then with a trip to Fanfare 2013 Heritage Quilters of Huntsville Quilt Show.
The class on face painting and makeup tips will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 3, offering participants plenty of time before the spooky holiday. The class will be held in room 226 of the Burrow Center.
Participants will learn techniques for creating their own Halloween character and will have the opportunity to practice during the session. The $15 registration fee includes paint and makeup. Visit www.wsccalumni.org/facepainting for more information. Deadline for registration is Sept. 27.
An Oct. 11 trip will transport participants to Huntsville’s Von Braun Civic Center to take in more than 250 quilts on display at the quilt show. The day-trip will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The $20 fee includes transportation, admission to the quilt show and a “meat and three” lunch at either the Blue Plate Café or Rolos Café in Huntsville.

November is educational, with a Nov. 1 event on Marketing Your Business with Social Media and a Nov. 5 how-to on making wreaths with deco-mesh material.
Marketing Your Business with Social Media will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 1. The fee is $25 for the general public and $15 for Wallace State students. The class will be taught in the Business Education building, room 206, and will show how to utilize social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to promote businesses. Deadline for registration is Oct. 29. Register online at www.wsccalumni.org/social.
Holiday Inspiration: Making Wreaths with Deco-Mesh, will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in room 206 of the Burrow Center. The class will provide materials and instruction to make a holiday wreath in this popular format. The fee is $30 and the registration deadline is Oct. 29. Register online at www.wsccalumni.org/mesh.
Other events to look forward to include the Little Black Charity Bash on Feb. 22, the PTA/OTA/MSG Alumni Connection on March 6 and the Nursing Alumni Connection on April 25.
