HANCEVILLE – Freshman catcher Andrea McKenzie finished 3-for-7 with a three-run homer and seven RBIs and Wallace State’s softball team swept a doubleheader on the road Tuesday at Gadsden State, extending their winning streak to a season-high seven games.
McKenzie and the Lady Lions, the NJCAA defending national champions, slugged four homers combined in the twinbill, winning the opener 14-5 and capping the sweep with a 7-2 triumph.
In the opener, Wallace State (25-17, 2-0 Alabama Community College Conference) hit three home runs. Sarah Jordan cranked a grand slam, McKenzie hit a three-run bomb and Kori Benson hit a solo shot, her team-leading ninth of the season.
The Lady Lions broke the game open with an eight-run fourth inning and a five-run seventh. McKenzie was 2-for-4 with the homer, a double and five RBIs, Benson had three hits, including the homer and a double, and Jordan complemented her grand slam with a double. Mackenzie Hill added a pair of hits for Wallace State, Isabella Campbell was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Madeline Lee was 1-for-4 with a run scored and Rachel Ragland had a single and pair of RBIs.
Ragland (9-9) was the winning pitcher, allowing two earned runs on three hits in six innings. She struck out six. Paige Browning pitched a scoreless seventh in relief.
Amanda Medders (11-4) went the distance in the second game, allowing two runs on five hits. She struck out four and walked two.
Campbell joined the home run parade to support Medders, hitting her seventh of the season. Campbell finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Annie Holcomb was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, McKenzie had a two-run single, Lee and Benson each singled and scored a run and Misty Doran was 1-for-2.
Wallace State continues conference play on the road Thursday with a doubleheader at Marion Military Institute.
