Wallace State to host approximately 600 high school juniors during “InvesTECHgate” week beginning April 14

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Community College will host its third annual “InvesTECHgate” week beginning April 14, and this year’s event should be the biggest draw yet.
Various Wallace State technical programs are set to be flooded with approximately 600 high school juniors from Blount, Cullman and Morgan Counties. InvesTECHgate allows high school students who may be interested in pursuing a career in the technical field to get an in-depth look at those programs on the collegiate level.
“Students attending ‘InvesTECHgate’ have expressed an interest in a career in the technical field. They can choose one program and explore more about it during this event. They’ll have an hour and a half to spend time at the program of their choosing,” said Wallace State’s Jennifer Helton, one of the college’s Career Coaches, who visits high schools on a consistent basis. “The goal of this event is to offer more than a tour or presentation of a program. With supervision, it allows the students to perform the tasks a Wallace State student performs daily, whether it’s cooking a pizza, working on cars, welding or coloring hair extensions.”
Students attending InvesTECHgate selected a particular technical program by completing a recent survey administered at their respective schools.
High schools scheduled to visit campus are West Point, Good Hope, Fairview, Hanceville, Holly Pond, Vinemont, Cold Springs, Brewer, Falkville, Danville, Hayden, Locust Fork and J.B. Pennington. The event continues each day through April 17.
“It should be a great week. It’s great for the Wallace State faculty and staff as well because they get to interact and offer advice to high school students who are possibly interested in pursuing the same careers,” Helton said. “We think it’s a great opportunity for the high school students because you can’t just walk into an industry and get hands-on experience. They’ll be able to do that here. It will be less observation and more interaction.”
Students in attendance will also be advised on the college admissions process and financial aid and dual enrollment opportunities. The event is organized by Wallace State’s Career Coaches.
Wallace State’s Technical Division consists of programs in Agricultural Production/Horticulture, Automotive Manufacturing Technology, Collision Repair, Automotive Service Technology, Aviation/Flight Technology, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, Diesel Mechanics, Electronics Technology, Engineering Technology, HVAC, Machine Tool Technology/CNC, Poultry Science, Upholstery and Welding.
