Wallace State Fine and Performing Arts Preview Day planned

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — The Fine and Performing Arts program at Wallace State Community College will hold a Preview Day on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon, in the Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. The program is geared toward future college students interested in learning more about the arts programs at the college. The general public is welcome, as well, to see abbreviated performances by current students and tour the arts building.
The Fine and Performing Arts program at Wallace State consists of many opportunities not only for students majoring in the arts, but for those wishing to participate as an elective or simply for the fun of it. The fine arts programs include opportunities in music, theatre and visual arts.
The music programs include the band programs: jazz, concert and pep; and vocal groups: concert choir, jazz choir and singers. The band and vocal groups often collaborate on performances. The Wallace State Singers are currently working on a production entitled “Disney Through the Decades.” Past productions included a tribute to the Beatles. The Jazz Band’s Big Band Dinner Dance is always well attended, as is the Concert Band’s Veterans Day program. All groups perform off campus at community events throughout the year, and take touring trips out of state.
The theatre program often pulls from the singers and choir groups, but stands on its own as a well-respected entity of the fine arts program. The theatre program is currently working on a production of “Into the Woods.” Past productions include “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Shrek,” “You Can’t Take it With You,” “Much Ado About Nothing,” “Guys and Dolls,” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
The visual communications and art program offers computer-based graphic and multimedia design training alongside traditional foundation level studio art courses. The visual communications students are currently preparing for the Spring Arts in April Exhibition entitled “Piet, Pixels & Polygons.”
The Preview Day will also provide information about the scholarships offered each year through the arts programs. Specific scholarships are offered through the visual arts, music and theatre programs.
