Wallace State’s basketball teams sweep Snead State on road; No. 7 WSCC softball picks up three wins over weekend

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s basketball teams swept Snead State on the road Monday night.
The Lady Lions earned a convincing 83-54 victory in the opener, and the men capped the successful road trip with a 77-69 win.
In the second game, men’s guard Bennett Wilson poured in a career-high 20 points for the Lions, the defending Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) champion.
Wilson had cracked double digits in scoring only once before Monday night, but torched the Parsons by shooting 6 of 8 from the field, including knocking down three 3-pointers. He well surpassed his season average of 4.3 points per game.
Wallace State (13-11, 4-2 ACCC) outscored Snead State 47-39 in the second half after a 30-all tie at intermission.
The Lions, coached by John Meeks, have won three in a row and are among the four teams tied for first in the division. Meeks is five wins away from 100 career victories at Wallace State.
Three other Wallace State men scored in double figures Monday. Jacob Barrett finished with 13 points and six rebounds, Immanuel King had 10 points and eight rebounds and Kriston Beasley added 10 points.
Tyrell Clary added eight points off the bench for the Lions.
Wallace State women 83, Snead State 54
The Wallace State Lady Lions also won their third consecutive conference game on Monday.
The Lady Lions (20-3, 3-2 ACCC) led 40-32 at the break, and like the men, used an explosive second half to put the game away, outscoring Snead State 43-22 over the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore forward Morgan Smith paced Wallace State with 25 points, six rebounds and five steals. BreAnna Thompson collected her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, Haven Albright scored 13 points and Kaneisha Mixon added 12.
Both Wallace State teams host Gadsden State on Thursday at Tom Drake Coliseum, beginning with the women’s game at 5:30 p.m.
No. 7 Wallace State softball
Wallace State’s seventh-ranked softball team picked up three wins over the weekend in Clearwater, Fla., at the season-opening JUCO Showcase tournament.
The Lady Lions (3-5) defeated Florida State College at Jacksonville, Daytona State College and Santa Fe College over the three-day tournament. Wallace State lost to St. Petersburg College, the State College of Florida – Manatee, College of Central Florida, South Georgia State College and Odessa College.
Freshman Leisha Yamauchi led Wallace State at the plate throughout the tournament, collecting eight hits, including three doubles, and three RBIs. She was also the winning pitcher against Florida State College.
Sam Riley, a freshman from Winfield, finished 7 for 19 with four RBIs for the Lady Lions, while Katlyn Whitehead collected four RBIs.
Wallace State sophomore Rachel Ragland was the winning pitcher against Santa Fe College. She tossed a complete game, scattering three runs, one earned, on nine hits.
Freshman Julia Dailey notched a win in relief against Daytona State College. She went 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits. She struck out four and walked one.
Wallace State plays this weekend at the Creek Indian JUCO Classic in Atmore.
