Entries sought for 2015 Arts in April Celebration at Wallace State

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — This Spring, thoughts will turn to “Piet, Pixels & Polygons” at Wallace State Community College, as preparations begin for the 2015 Arts in April Celebration. The annual exhibition will be held Monday, March 30 through Saturday, April 11.
“We want to encourage all of the artists in and around Cullman County to send in entries for our annual Arts in April Showcase Exhibition,” said Adrian Scott, head of the Visual Arts program at Wallace State. “This year, we are taking our inspiration from Dutch abstract artist Piet Mondrian. Mondrian pioneered a visual style which famously created abstract, non-objective compositions composed of basic visual elements such as squares, rectangles, lines and the primary colors red, yellow and blue.”
Artists can also draw inspiration from popular cultural examples such as vintage 8 and 16 bit video game characters, the games Minecraft and Tetris, and the toy puzzle Rubik’s Cube.
“Any imagery and subject matter which participants feel creatively relate to this theme is welcome for the exhibition,” Scott said. “Artwork which does not relate to the theme of ‘Piet , Pixels and Polygons’ is also welcome for exhibition in this community showcase.”
The media categories for the exhibition include: drawing, painting, photography, ceramics/sculpture, digital art and multimedia crafts. Age divisions are open for kindergarten through second grade, third through fifth grade, sixth through eighth grade, ninth through 12th grade and adults.
Current Wallace State students, employees, public and home school-aged children and adults in the Wallace State service area are eligible to submit entries. Each artist may individually submit a total of two artworks from any of the five media categories.
A visual arts entry must be an original drawing, painting, photograph, sculpture, collage or computer-generated image. Each entry must be the work of only one individual. Deadline for submission is Friday, March 20. Any schools or art entries needing to make other submission arrangements should contact Scott at 256.352.8145 or the Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts at 256.352.8277.
