Wallace State Child Development courses all online

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — All courses for the Wallace State Community College’s Child Development program are now online. Marcie Hill, director of the Child Development program at Wallace State, has been working on creating a completely online curriculum since she took over less than two years ago.
“As a working mother myself and having recently finished my doctorate, I know it’s hard to find the time to sometimes do the simplest things, much less attend classes on campus,” Hill said. “That’s why I wanted to offer anyone interested in Child Development the opportunity to take my classes online without having to come to campus for class meetings. Students can more easily find time for coursework when it is convenient for them, such as when the kids are asleep or after they get off work.”
Wallace State’s Child Development program offers an Associate in Applied Science degree or Short Certificate students can also take three classes to fulfill the education component of a CDA (Child Development Associate) Credential. Classes taken for a CDA or Short Certificate can all be applied toward a degree, as well.
“Whether you want to open your own child care business, work in a day care or become an early childhood educator, Wallace State can provide a strong foundation toward meeting your goals,” Hill said.
The program has access to a number of scholarships and grants to aid in financing an education, Hill added. One is the Leadership in Child Care Scholarship, which is open to Alabama residents currently working in child care centers or programs and family and group homes. The deadline to apply for the Leadership in Chile Care Scholarship is June 1 for the fall semester. This scholarship will provide funding for summer courses for those who utilize it for the previous fall and spring semesters. A workshop will be offered on Monday, May 11, from 5 to 6 p.m., for those interested in getting tips on how to fill out the scholarship application. The workshop will be held in room 409 of the Tom Bevill Health Education Building.
Another is T.E.A.C.H. (Teacher Education And Compensation Helps) Early Childhood® Alabama, which works with employers to help fund an employee’s education by providing a small percentage in matching grants. Other scholarships and financial aid may also be available through Wallace State’s financial aid and scholarship programs.
