HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s sixth-ranked men’s golf team recently finished fifth at the NJCAA National Fall Preview Tournament in Viera, Fla.

Sophomore Eli Marty was an All-Tournament selection after shooting a 1-under par 215 during the 54-hole tournament. He carded a 71-70-74, placing him in a six-way tie for fifth place. Marty, who was a 3rd-team NJCAA Division I All-American last spring, has earned All-Tournament recognition in two of the three events Wallace State has played this fall.

Wallace State’s Sylas Elliott finished at even par-216 for the Lions after shooting a 73-71-72. In early September, Elliott was the low medalist at the Wallace State Fall Invitational. He was named a 2nd-team NJCAA All-American during his freshman season.

Freshman Chip Willoughby finished with a 225 for Wallace State, while Trey Hanvey shot a 227.

Wallace State finished with a 19-over 883 as a group.

Indian Hills (Ill.) Community College and Odessa (Texas) College were tournament co-champions, each finishing with a 7-under 857.

Rounding out the tournament field were Central Alabama, Faulkner State, Eastern Florida State, McLennon (Texas) CC, Darton (S.C.) CC, Garden City (Kan.) CC and Cape Fear (N.C.) CC.

Wallace State’s next tournament is scheduled for Oct. 25-27 at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Tournament in Gulfport, Miss.

Meanwhile, Wallace State’s women’s team is competing this week in the Martin Methodist Redhawk Fall Invitational in Athens. It’s the Lady Lions fall tournament finale.

Wallace State, playing in its inaugural season, is already ranked 10th in the latest NJCAA GolfStat.com poll.

Earlier this month, Wallace State’s women placed fifth among nine teams in the Birmingham-Southern Shootout. The Lady Lions have also competed this fall at West Alabama and Tennessee Wesleyan College.
