Dr. Whit Gibbons visits Wallace State for annual Earth Day activities

HANCEVILLE, ALA. –  Wallace State welcomed Dr. Whit Gibbons as a special guest to campus Thursday as the college continued its tradition of celebrating Earth Day.
Dr. Gibbons is Professor Emeritus of Ecology at the University of Georgia and the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL). Gibbons has written or edited more than 20 books and has published more than 250 articles in scientific journals. He has also won multiple awards in the herpetology and ecology fields.
Gibbons spoke at the Wallace State School of Nursing and Center for Science and educated students, faculty and staff about various reptiles, amphibians and wildlife and their specific habitats in the area, in Alabama and across the world.
Gibbons also encouraged those in attendance to remember that every day and night is Earth Day, to develop a passion for wildlife and all aspects of the environment and to teach others to appreciate the natural world.
Free T-shirts were distributed to those in attendance.
Wallace State recognizes Earth Day each year, hosting a variety of speakers to commemorate the event or planting trees on campus.
Wallace State’s Green Team sponsors and organizes the event headed by Dr. Bill Moss, Wallace State’s Director of Student Development. The Green Team leads an effort each Friday to recycle on campus.
Wallace State is also a tobacco-free campus, which is a valuable component of protecting the Earth.
