WSCC Athletics: No. 13 softball and tennis teams notch conference wins; women’s golf finishes runner-up in WSCC Invitational

HANCEVILLE, ALA. — Wallace State’s 13th-ranked softball team hits the road for Marion Military Institute today after sweeping rival Shelton State at Bobby McCracken Stadium on Tuesday, winning 7-4 and 8-0.
The Lions have won six of their last seven conference games, improving to 35-7 overall and 8-4 in Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) action.
Sophomore pitcher Meagan Schwieterman (15-4) tossed a six-inning shutout in the second game, losing a perfect game in the top of the sixth. She spun a two-hitter, striking out seven Lady Bucs.
At the plate, Kaley Anthony finished with a double, single, and three RBIs for Wallace State. Alysia Anderson was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Morgan Weatherwax came off the bench with an RBI single and Addie Robinson added a sacrifice fly.
Wallace State broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning.
In Tuesday’s opener, Robinson finished with a double and three RBIs, Callie Ryan was 3-for-3 with a run scored, Keeli Bobbitt singled and scored two runs and Anthony, Chaney Phillips and Kalynn Holcomb each added an RBI.
Sophomore Lauren Keplinger went the distance on the mound, allowing three earned runs. She walked four and recorded four strikeouts.
After today’s twinbill, the Lions return home Saturday, hosting Snead State at 1 p.m.
Wallace State tennis
Wallace State’s tennis teams won conference matches against Coastal Alabama-South on Tuesday, keeping both squads undefeated in ACCC action.
The 16th-ranked Wallace State men won 9-0. Earning singles wins for the Lions were No. 1 Sebastian Arce, No. 2 Ethan Aycock (6-2, 6-3), No. 3 Nick Hester (6-2, 6-0), No. 4 Andrew Bizilia (6-1, 6-1), No. 5 William Brackin (6-0, 6-1) and No. 6 Zach Mastin (6-1, 6-0).
Wallace State’s doubles duos of Arce and Brackin, Hester and Aycock, and Bizilia and Ben Hicks all flourished.
The Lady Lions prevailed 8-1.
Earning singles wins for Wallace State were No. 1 Nicole Barron (6-3, 3-6, 6-3), No. 3 Emily Perry (6-0, 6-1), No. 4 Haley Putman (6-0, 6-2), No. 5 Kailee Upchurch (6-3, 6-2) and No. 6 Crissy Cruz (6-4, 6-0).
In doubles, Barron and Putman won in the top slot. Perry and Mary Ann Wolfe, and Cruz and Upchurch also prevailed.
The 24th-ranked Lady Lions travel to Central Alabama today, while the men play at Gadsden State on Friday.
Wallace State women’s golf
Wallace State’s women’s golf team finished tournament runner-up in the 2019 Wallace State Spring Invitational at Cross Creek Golf Course on Tuesday.
Sophomore Michaela Bryan, who has four career individual low medalist championships under her belt, finished sixth overall (86-92 – 178) for the Lady Lions.
Wallace State’s Paige Lemm finished in 11th place (92-93 – 185). Wallace State’s Maci Yeager, Claire Newby and Abbi Grimes held 13th-15th overall.
Eastern Florida State earned the tournament championship. Jeff State, Calhoun and Marion Military Institute made up the field.
The Lady Lions, who have won two tournaments this spring, now prepare for the ACCC/Region 22 championship to be held April 14-16 at Point Mallard in Decatur. Wallace State’s women are the two-time defending ACCC champs.
