Wallace State athletics: Women’s tennis, baseball and softball updates

HANCEVILLE, ALA. — Wallace State’s women’s tennis team had three players earn singles victories this week at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Women’s Championship in Tyler, Texas.
Nicole Barron (6-3, 6-1), Haley Putman (6-0, 6-1), Crissy Cruz (6-3, 6-3) each won their first-round matches at nationals on Sunday before being eliminated on Monday.
Wallace State’s doubles team of Mary Ann Wolfe and Emily Perry prevailed in their first-round match, 6-1, 6-2.
Wallace State racked up 9.5 points during the first two days of competition.
The Lady Lions are playing in the women’s championship for the second straight season.
Rounding out the field for Wallace State at nationals is Kailee Upchurch.
Wolfe and Martha Ann Lucas are the lone sophomores on this season’s roster.
Wallace State baseball
Wallace State’s baseball team begins its postseason quest on Friday as the Lions play Chattahoochee Valley at 4 p.m., at the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Tournament in Ozark.
Wallace State finished the regular season with a 29-15 record, including a 22-10 mark in ACCC action. The Lions earned the North Division’s second seed in the double-elimination tournament.
Randy Putman’s squad enters the postseason on a hot note, winning nine of its past 10 games. The Lions won their final three regular season series.
As a team, the Lions have a collective .317 average and 3.95 ERA on the mound.
Wallace State sophomore Easton Kirk has put together one of the best offensive seasons in the program’s history. He won the ACCC Triple Crown, finishing with a .480 average, 18 home runs and 64 RBIs.
Noah Fondren, who committed this week to Mississippi State, is hitting .333 with 19 RBIs and 32 runs scored. Jack Haney also hits at a .333 clip with four homers and 23 RBIs.
On the mound, freshman Jerry Dale Bowman carries an 8-1 record and 2.28 ERA into his first collegiate postseason tournament. Bowman, a Smiths Station native, was tied for the league lead in wins during the regular season and was fourth in ERA. He added two saves, tossing a team-high 67 innings.
Sophomore Garrett Brown has been a steady mound presence for the Lions as well. He has a 5-1 record with a 3.32 ERA in 57 innings.
Wallace State is seeking its eight ACCC title and first since 2006.
Wallace State softball closes season with 50-12 record
Wallace State’s 17th-ranked softball team had its season end at the ACCC Tournament in Alabaster over the weekend.
The Lions finished the season with a 50-12 record, winning the ACCC North Division regular season championship. It’s the first time since 2014 the Lions aren’t representing the conference at the national tournament in St. George, Utah.
Wallace State freshman Addie Robinson was named the 2019 ACCC/Region 22 Player of the Year, and sophomore pitcher Meagan Schwieterman was named the 2019 ACCC North Pitcher of the Year.
Alysia Anderson and Callie Ryan were each named to the ACCC North Division 1st team.
Wallace State’s sophomore class won 97 games in two seasons, winning one conference title.
This season’s sophomores are Schwieterman, Anderson, Lauren Keplinger, Keeli Bobbitt, Sydney McKissick, Kaley Anthony, Sidney Edwards, Becca Feazell, Mabry Norris, Kalynn Holcomb, Katie Burden, Hannah Ingram, Morgan Weatherwax and Taylor Goodpastor.
