Community Action Partnership of North Alabama provides grant to WSCC students

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – A number of students at Wallace State Community College are one step closer to reaching their employment goals thanks to a grant from the Community Action Partnership of North Alabama.
The agency, which supports 15 North Alabama counties, recently partnered with WSCC to provide grants to students that will help them as they work to become employed in their chosen field. The first three checks were distributed to students in the Nursing, Industrial Electrical and Automotive Technician programs.
Michael Tubbs, CEO of Community Action Partnership of North Alabama, said their goal was to be able to provide assistance that will result in employment outcomes for students and help them reach a level of economic independence. This program, he said, will help bridge gaps that traditional funding programs may not cover.
Tubbs said students may sometimes encounter barriers or hurdles that seem too hard to overcome. “But they’re not so big when you have support.”
The grants are open to students from Cullman, Lawrence and Morgan Counties. Eligible students can receive up to $1,500 a year, and it can be used for things such as tuition for non-credit courses, testing, software programs or even tools.
Owen Green will use his grant to pay for tools to use in the automotive technician program. Tiffany Webster will use her grant to help pay tuition for her Certified Nursing Assistant courses. Eric Raney will use his grant to pay for software programs he uses in the Industrial Electronics program.
“It’s very helpful and much appreciated,” said Green.
“Some programs run $400 and $500…and that’s a pretty substantial amount,” Raney said.
Suzanne Harbin, director of advancement, said she is grateful for the partnership with Community Action. “We appreciate the opportunity to assist students with this additional source of funding.”
