No. 7 Wallace State softball splits pair of games at Shelton State, plays home conference opener on Tuesday
HANCEVILLE – Seventh-ranked Wallace State softball split a pair of close contests at Shelton State on Sunday, winning 2-0 behind Lindsey DeFee’s five-hit gem before falling 2-0 in the second game.
In the opener, DeFee won her sixth straight start, limiting the Lady Bucs to only five hits. DeFee (14-3) struck out six and walked three as she lowered her ERA to 1.54.
Maria Mitchell’s second-inning, two-run single gave DeFee all the run support she needed.
Laken Hancock finished 3-for-4 for Wallace State (30-7, 3-1 Alabama Community College Conference) in the win, Mitchell was 2-for-3, Lee had a bunt single and scored a run and Kori Benson scored a run.
Wallace State’s BreeAnna Blevins was the tough-luck loser in the nightcap, surrendering a game-winning hit to Shelton State’s Casey Wyatt in the bottom of the seventh.
The Lady Lions collected three hits in the loss. Katie Gentle had a double and Lee and Brittany Gillison each had singles.
Blevins (13-3) went 6 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits, striking out eight and walking four.
Wallace State, winners of five of the last six ACCC state championships, hosts its first conference home game Tuesday against Gadsden State. Their doubleheader begins at 4 p.m. at Bobby McCracken Stadium.
