HANCEVILLE, Ala. – April is annually recognized as National Community College Month, and at Wallace State it is always one of the busiest months of the year.
One of the main initiatives on campus this month is the seventh annual Arts in April celebration. Throughout the month, Wallace State has hosted pottery and art exhibitions, a piano recital, an English Forum with storyteller Nina Reeves, and a talk by Sam Pugh, the outreach coordinator from the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
Events still to come include five performances of the Pulitzer Prize winning comedy “You Can’t Take it With You” held in the Betty Leeth Haynes Theatre at 9:30 a.m. on April 11, at 7 p.m. April 11-13, and at 2 p.m. on April 14.
The Art Department will host a reception on Saturday, April 13, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. to honor participants in its Juried Visual Arts Competition.
On April 16, the Concert Choir will perform its “Seasons of Love” concert at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Burrow Center Recital Hall, in advance of their upcoming Kennedy Center performance in Washington, D.C. Also on April 16, philosophy scholar Dr. William Lawhead will give a talk on “Philosophy in the Real World” in the Burrow Center Recital Hall at 9:30 a.m.
The Jazz Band will hold its annual dinner dance on April 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the atrium of the Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. The Music Department’s Spring Show, featuring the Jazz and Concert Bands, will be held April 25 at 7 p.m. in the Burrow Center Recital Hall.
On April 23, the Evelyn Burrow Museum will provide a gallery talk at 11:30 a.m. with Museum Director Donny Wilson and collector Danny Maltbie discussing the museum’s current exhibition on pre-1900s Alabama pottery. On April 30, a Cultural Conversation about Italian art and architecture will be held in the Recital Hall at 5:30 p.m. preceding a meeting for travelers taking part in Wallace State’s May trip to Italy.
Other events scheduled this month, include the Wallace State Alumni Association’s “Yard Party”, which was moved from April 11 to April 25 due to the threat of severe weather. Students, faculty and staff will compete in a handful of competitions, including horseshoes, hula hoop, pedestal joust, volleyball, cornhole and dodgeball from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Wallace State Academy of Culinary Arts plans to sell fish tacos, boardwalk fries, barbecue sandwiches and cheesecake on a stick from a food truck.
On April 16, Wallace State will host a Career Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bailey Center. The fair is open to all current and former Wallace State students and will attract local, state and national businesses.
Wallace State’s Healthy Campus committee is encouraging bicycling this month, and has established a two-mile route on campus as a way to encourage everyone to embrace a healthy lifestyle. The committee is also co-sponsoring the United 4 Health 5K Run and Fun Bike Ride benefitting Cullman United Way on April 21 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Wallace State. Entry fee is $10 and the first 100 participants earn a free T-shirt.
The college’s baseball, softball and golf teams have as busy April on store as well, as they prepare for postseason play next month.
The nationally ranked Lady Lions (32-7, 5-1 ACCC) won both halves of their home opener against Gadsden State on April 9. They will host double headers at home, against Calhoun on April 18 at 4 p.m., against Snead State on April 20 at 2 p.m., against Shelton State on April 21 at 2 p.m., against Marion Military on April 23 at 4 p.m., against Columbia State (Tenn.) on April 24 at 4 p.m., and against Alabama Southern on April 26 at 4 p.m.
The Lions (21-14, 13-7 ACCC), one game out of first place in the division, host double headers at home against Shelton State on April 14 at 2 p.m., against Motlow State (Tenn.) on April 16 at 4 p.m., against Calhoun on April 20 at 3 p.m., and against Columbia State (Tenn.) on April 24 at 1 p.m.
Wallace State’s golf team will compete in a pair of important April tournaments, traveling to South Carolina for a NJCAA District event April 14-16 and to the ACCC state tournament in Decatur April 28-30.
The Wallace State Horticulture program is holding its annual spring plant sale weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The college’s Green Team will be planting trees for Earth Day on April 22.
Among the Wallace State Continuing Education Department’s offerings in April are classes on Genealogy and the Computer on Fridays, April 26 through May 3, from 9 a.m. to noon; Eating to Live a Healthy Life on Saturdays, April 20 and 27 from 10 a.m. to noon; and a Serv-Safe Test Prep and Certification Course on April 29, 30, and May 6.
The Wallace State Nursing Department and the Alumni Association are co-sponsoring the 2013 Nursing Alumni Connection continuing education event on Friday, April 19, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Priority registration for summer semester begins on April 29.
