HANCEVILLE – Students Victoria Frith and Cory Meyer are Wallace State Community College’s All-Alabama Academic Team recipients. Frith and Meyer were among 50 students recognized recently at the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) All-Alabama Academic Team luncheon in Montgomery.
Frith, the starting shortstop on Wallace State’s nationally-ranked softball team, is a pre-engineering major, who currently maintains a 4.0 grade point average. After completing Wallace State, the Huntsville native and graduate of Grissom High, aims to transfer to UAHuntsville and major in chemical engineering, while playing softball for the Lady Chargers.
Meyer, majoring in education, compiled a 3.75 GPA at Wallace State. He finished his coursework in December and has already begun classes at Athens State, where he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in math. The Vinemont graduate aspires to be a high school math teacher.
The All-Alabama Academic Team Recognition Program began in 1995 and complements the All-USA National Academic Team Program sponsored by USA Today, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the American Association of Community Colleges. Two students from each of the 25 colleges in the ACCS system are annually recognized at the banquet and selected among a lengthy list of nominees.
To be eligible for the honor, students must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA, complete a minimum of 12 semester hours at their college and plan to continue their education at a four-year institution. Winners from each school also must exhibit a keen amount of leadership on their campus, remaining engaged outside of the classroom.
Frith and Meyer each won a $1,000 scholarship for being selected as Wallace State representatives and earned acknowledgment in front of their families, college presidents and deans and state dignitaries.
