HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Anyone wanting to kick up their heals or just hear instrumental performances of big band style music need to look no further than Wallace State Community College on Friday, April 19, for the annual Jazz Band Dance.
Jazz DanceThe atrium of the Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts will echo with the tunes made famous by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman and more. Two dance floors will be open so those who are light of foot can spin and twirl to swing and Latin music, waltzes, fox trots, mambas and other genres of dance.
Wallace State Music Department Director Ricky Burks said the Jazz Band Dance has been rolling along since the early 1990s. The community-wide event is a fundraiser for the group’s spring trip. This year the Jazz Band will go to Chicago in May, where they will perform two shows.
“It gets them into different venues and we take them to see some educational sites and try to broaden their horizons,” Burks said of the spring trips.
Before then, however, they will help local dancers and music lovers trip the light fantastic during the Jazz Band Dance.
The dance will start at 7 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. The band will perform two different sets throughout the evening. Light refreshments will be available. A $15 donation is requested.
While there won’t be any formal dance instruction on the night of the dance, Burks said there will be a number of very good dancers who would be happy to give friendly pointers to anyone who isn’t as confident about their dancing abilities.
Dance groups from Huntsville and Birmingham are often in attendance, he said. Programs on each table will inform dancers of the next song and the style of dance.
The dress code for the dance is casual for those attending, Burks added, though the 18-piece band will be dressed in tuxedoes.
“Come as you are,” Burks said of those wishing to attend. “You can dress up as much as you want.”
