Wallace State’s Ashley Nance earns NJCAA women’s basketball honorable mention All-American recognition

HANCEVILLE – Wallace State women’s basketball player Ashley Nance earned national recognition this week, securing a spot on the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) honorable mention All-American team.
Nance, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from Danville, averaged a double-double during the 2012-13 season, scoring 16.8 points per game and collecting 10.5 rebounds. She also led the Lady Lions with 72 steals and was second with 67 assists. In March, she was named the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) player of the year after finishing with 20 double-doubles and leading the ACCC North Division in scoring.
“Since 2000, when I got here, I truly believe Ashley is one of the best players to come through our program, considering what she’s accomplished both on and off the floor from a maturity standpoint. She’s going to have a great career wherever she decides to go,” said Wallace State coach Ron Burdette. “She came here as a raw basketball player from Danville and is leaving as the ACCC player of the year. She deserves all she’s worked hard for.”
Nance had a brilliant career at Wallace State, despite a lack of size for an ideal post player, finishing with 933 points and 551 rebounds, for averages of 14.6 points and 6.8 rebounds. The Wallace State women finished 23-10 this season and state runner-up in both of Nance’s season on campus. Additionally, Nance was a first-team All-ACCC selection as a freshman in 2012.
One of Nance’s biggest career improvements, from her freshman to sophomore seasons, was enhancing her shooting percentages. She shot 42 percent from the field and 75 percent (177 of 237) from the free-throw line as a sophomore, upgrading from a 35 percent clip from the field and 66 percent from the charity stripe during her freshman season.
Nance, who is mulling four-year offers from UNA, Auburn-Montgomery, Martin Methodist College and UT Martin, is the third women’s player in as many years to earn a NJCAA honorable mention selection, joining TaCouya Allen in 2012 and Bailee Robinson in 2011.
