Wallace State softball, baseball teams to donate Saturday’s home proceeds to Breast Cancer Research; softball’s Clem two wins away from 700
HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s softball and baseball teams will donate their Saturday home game proceeds to Breast Cancer Research. Wallace State softball hosts Snead State in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday, and the baseball team welcomes Calhoun for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
Wallace State softball is also home Thursday against Calhoun beginning at 4 p.m. at Bobby McCracken Stadium. A doubleheader sweep for Wallace State will mark another memorable milestone in coach Jayne Clem’s career, as she enters two wins shy of 700 with the program.
Clem, less than two years removed from surpassing 600 wins, has guided Wallace State softball to a NJCAA Division I national championship (2008), two national runner-up finishes (2009, 2010) and a third-place finish last season. Wallace State has won seven state championships, including five of the last six, during Clem’s tenure, and she has been named conference coach of the year 10 times.
Wallace State swept Gadsden State on the road Tuesday, prevailing 10-1 and 6-0, to give Clem a chance to reach the milestone at home.
In Tuesday’s opener, outfielder Katie Gentle continued her stellar season, drilling a pair of homers and finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs. She hit a two-run homer in the second and a solo shot in the sixth. Gentle, a Hartselle graduate, is hitting .507 with 10 homers and a team-high 52 RBIs.
Madeline Lee added a pair of hits in the opener, including her sixth homer, Lauren Hancock was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Maria Mitchell finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Paige Rowland added a run-scoring single.
Lindsey DeFee (16-4) was the winning pitcher for Wallace State, surrendering only one run on three hits in six innings.
BreeAnna Blevins (16-4) tossed two-hit ball over six innings in the second game, recording 10 strikeouts in a 6-0 victory. Kelsey King pitched a scoreless inning in both games.
Lee was 2-for-3 and scored two runs for the Lady Lions, Victoria Frith had a pair of hits and scored a run, Ashleigh McClure contributed a two-run double, Libby Olinger had an RBI single and Hancock, Mitchell and Shaq Morris each had an RBI.
