No. 17 Wallace State softball clinches 8th straight ACCC North Division title after sweeping Marion Military

HANCEVILLE – No. 17 Wallace State softball has earned its eighth straight Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) North Division championship after sweeping Marion Military in a Tuesday doubleheader, winning 6-2 and 12-1.
The Lady Lions (43-10, 16-4 ACCC) will be the North’s top seed at the ACCC/Region 22 tournament scheduled for May 3-5 at Veteran’s Park in Alabaster.
Wallace State’s offense continued to use the long ball to its advantage during the sweep. Freshman Maria Mitchell blasted a pair of homers in the opening game. She hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning, added a solo homer in the sixth and finished 3 for 3.
In the finale, Kori Benson and Paige Rowland each had two-run homers. It was Benson’s team-leading 15th homer and Rowland’s ninth.
Laken Hancock had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs in the doubleheader, shortstop Victoria Frith added three hits and two RBIs and Benson was 2 for 3 with an RBI in the opener.
Sophomore Libby Olinger finished 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs in the nightcap, while Annie Holcomb and Ashleigh McClure each had a single and scored a run off the bench.
Starters BreeAnna Blevins and Lindsey DeFee both continued their effective work on the mound. In the opener, Blevins (20-4) struck out seven and allowed two runs on three hits during her complete-game effort.  DeFee (20-5) recorded two strikeouts, walked two and surrendered two hits in four innings of work in the 12-1 victory. Kelsey King pitched the final inning, allowing one run.
Wallace State will wrap up the regular season Friday, hosting Alabama Southern in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. The sophomores will be recognized before the opener.
