No. 7 Wallace State golf team finishes state runner-up in ACCC/NJCAA Region 22 tournament at Point Mallard
DECATUR – Wallace State’s seventh-ranked golf team finished second at the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC)/Region 22 tournament, held Monday and Tuesday at Point Mallard Golf Course.
The Lions shot an 880 overall and finished runner-up to Central Alabama Community College.
“Central Alabama showed why they are the No. 1 team in the country. They played better than I’ve seen them play all year long. They had it all together, and I hope we can put it all together by the time we get to Texas for nationals,” said Wallace State coach Dan York, a NJCAA Hall of Fame member. “We are going to be working hard the next two weeks to get better. Our guys are motivated. When a team does what Central Alabama did in this tournament, you congratulate them, go home, work hard and hope you have better success the next time.”
Freshman Chris Atchley was Wallace State’s low medalist in Decatur, earning first-team All-Region recognition. Atchley, a Buckhorn graduate, shot a 3-under par 141 during the opening 36 rounds Monday and added a 77 Tuesday for a 2-over par 218 total.
Wallace State’s Aksel Olsen finished right behind his teammate, shooting a 3-over-par 219. Olsen parred his final round after shooting a 147 over the first 36 holes.
Jake Miller, Michael Zierdt and Patrick Twesme rounded out the field for Wallace State.
Wallace State competes next at the NJCAA Division I national tournament set for May 12-17 at Lubbock, Texas. The Lions qualified for nationals after finishing third at the NJCAA Division I District 4 tournament, held at South Carolina in mid-April.
