Grant to support Cullman County literacy programs
Hanceville, Ala. – July 18, 2013 – Wallace State Community College Adult Education recently received a $10,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Organization to support its literacy programs. Specifically, the grant will allow the Adult Education Department to partner with The Link of Cullman County to provide literacy training in the form of one-on-one tutoring for adults developing basic reading skills and for those who wish to increase their English language proficiency.
“We have truly enjoyed partnering with Julie Grimes, Dawn Owens, and The Link of Cullman County,” said Kelley Jones, Wallace State Director of Adult Education. “The volunteers are outstanding and the program is designed to reach a large group of people. This outreach expands the number of individuals we may serve. It is a win-win for everyone involved. We truly appreciate Dollar General Literacy for this opportunity.”
Through this partnership, literacy classes that have been available on the Wallace State campus since 2006 will move to the offices at The Link, where additional volunteers are available to provide one-on-one coaching to complement the current classroom instruction. In addition, volunteers will coordinate a new program for speakers of English as a Second Language (ESL). New resources, including hand-held tablets will make the learning process more interactive as coaches and students work together.
“At Dollar General, we are passionate about our mission of Serving Others throughout the communities we serve,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “It’s exciting to see the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s outreach in action as we partner with organizations to further education and literacy and make a real difference in people’s lives.”
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2013, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 4.7 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
