Wallace State’s SGA sponsoring Christmas food drive to wrap up busy fall semester
HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s Student Government Association (SGA) is wrapping up a busy semester with an important holiday project.
The SGA group is sponsoring a food drive for its Christmas project, and all items collected will be donated to Cullman Caring for Kids. Students, employees and community members are encouraged to donate to the cause. Collection boxes, draped in red Christmas wrapping paper, have been placed in buildings all across campus as drop-off locations. Wallace State’s SGA will collect the items by no later than Dec. 13.
Wallace State’s SGA spearheaded an even bigger campus project just weeks ago. The group encouraged students and employees to participate in “The Big Thank You 2013,” a letter writing campaign designed to send notes of encouragement and appreciation to American troops deployed outside of the United States. The goal was to make sure Wallace State did its part in helping a soldier receive a “Thank You” letter by Thanksgiving, personally thanking individuals for the sacrifices each makes on a daily basis.
Greg Mayo, Wallace State’s SGA faculty co-sponsor, said the college mailed off more than 500 letters by the late October deadline.
In addition to the two holiday-themed drives, Wallace State’s SGA group has made weekly visits this semester to the Victorian Manor assisted living facility in Hanceville, playing bocce ball with the residents. Students have also assisted with various campus events and with Oktoberfest activities in Cullman.
Wallace State’s SGA is made up of 27 students, one of the biggest groups in recent history.
