HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Community College welcomed back its students for the beginning of the 2014 spring semester, ushering in a new era as the first classes were held at the college’s new state-of-the-art School of Nursing and Center for Science.
The 125,000-square-foot building, designed to replicate a hospital, houses the college’s acclaimed nursing program along with the popular biology department and related health and science classes.
“This new building is amazing,” said Wallace State sophomore Courtney James, a pre-dental hygiene student.  “Amazing” was also the sentiment of Justin Corley, a sophomore from Cullman, instructor Jonathan Cole’s Biology 104 class.
Added sophomore Caitlin Ivey, also a pre-dental hygiene major: “We are going to get spoiled in here, that’s for sure.”
Both James and Ivey had finished up microbiology on the first day of class in the new building and were each waiting for a 5 p.m. class to start.
Meanwhile, sophomores Natalee Estes and Daniel Hollis were lounging in the Burrow Center atrium before evening classes.
“I’m glad the semester has started,” said Estes, a Falkville native and general studies major. “It’s cool to be back so you can reconnect with some of the friends you’ve made in the fall.”
Hollis agreed.  “It’s always good to get back into the groove,” said the theatre and visual arts major.
Wallace State’s Learning Communities will host it spring kickoff on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Tom Drake Coliseum, featuring the Wallace State basketball teams, the WSCC Singers, Wallace State’s Cheerleaders and the Pep Band.
On Wednesday, Feb. 26, Doug Jones, of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama and the main 16th Street Bombing prosecutor, will visit campus and speak in conjunction with the college’s Common Read, “While the World Watched.”
Both of Wallace State’s basketball teams are red hot early into conference play. The Wallace State women have won 11 of their last 12 games and sport a 15-3 record, while the men maintain an eight-game winning streak at 15-4.  Both teams play at home on Thursday night against Gadsden starting at 5:30 p.m.
Wallace State’s baseball team opens its 2014 season on Feb. 1 at home, and the defending national champion Wallace State softball team begins defense of its crown on Feb. 7 in a season-opening tournament in Atmore.
Registration for Mini Term II classes begins on Tuesday, March 4, and classes begin Wednesday, March 5.
An open house showcasing new and renovated facilities, including the School of Nursing and Center for Science, the Academy of Cosmetic Arts, and the Bailey Center, among others will be held later this spring.
