Wallace State’s nationally-ranked basketball teams continue torrid paces by sweeping Southern Union

HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s nationally-ranked basketball teams remained red hot Thursday night, sweeping Southern Union at Tom Drake Coliseum.
Wallace State’s men, ranked 24th in the latest NJCAA poll, capped the night with a 68-63 victory over the Bison, extending the Lions’ winning streak to 14 games. It’s easily the longest streak during coach John Meeks’ four plus years with the program, and it’s only four wins shy of tying the 18-game streak set during the 2009-10 season.
Wallace State point guard Marcus Johnson torched Southern Union with a game-high 25 points. Lee Moore added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Lions, Jestin Lewis finished with eight points and X-keem Jones contributed eight.
Wallace State (21-4, 7-0 Alabama Community College Conference) led 35-28 at the half.
Friday marks exactly two months since the last Wallace State loss.
Jaron Davis led Southern Union with 21 points.
No. 23 Wallace State women 93, Southern Union 68
The No. 23 Wallace State Lady Lions dismantled Southern Union in Thursday’s opener, getting another strong performance from freshman Morgan Smith and solid contributions from the bench.
Smith neared a double-double, scoring 20 points and collecting nine rebounds for the Lady Lions (22-3, 5-0 ACCC), who have won eight games in a row and 18of 19.
Wallace State’s bench was also a huge factor, combining for 55 points. Morgan Pearson and Kaneisha Mixon each scored 10 off the bench, Haven Albright had eight and Morgan Hardy, Ashley Rodgers and Amber Carey scored seven apiece. BreAnna Thompson also added six points off the bench.
Wallace State, which is also a perfect 12-0 at home, led 51-33 at the break.
For Southern Union, Sadarian Beasley scored 18 points and Jackee Dodd finished with 16.
Both Wallace State teams play four of their final five conference games on the road. They’ll both travel to Lawson State on Saturday. The final regular season home game for both clubs is Feb. 24.
