Variety of classes offered during Homeschool Spring Workshops

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Wallace State Community College’s Continuing Education Department has a full slate of classes to offer homeschool students this spring with the second session as a continuation of the first session.
“Our first round of classes for homeschool children were so popular, we wanted to continue providing that service for those families,” said Melinda Edwards, Dean of Institutional Outreach at Wallace State. “This spring, we’ll have classes in English, reading, creative writing and more.” A summer session is also planned to begin in May.
Classes offered include English I-Language Arts for grades four and five. The class will cover parts of speech, sentence structure, paragraph composition, and short essays at a basic level. Students will learn how to understand the elements of a good story, how to think outside the box and how to follow oral and written directions to create original stories implementing those skills. Activities planned include creating puppets, putting on skits and writing and illustrating stories using a variety of mediums.
The classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. The first session for English I-Language Arts will be April 22-May 3, and the second from May 13-29. The fee is $20 for the three-week sessions.
English II-Creative Writing Workshop is open to students in grades six and seven, and will also cover parts of speech, sentence structure as well as various types of essay writing. They will learn how to hone those skills through new application and practical use, develop observation and oral language skills, how to grammatically correct sentences and interesting and practical uses of the English language.
These classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. The first session is April 22 to May 8, with the second session May 13-29. The fee is $20 for each three-week session.
Learn to Love Reading classes will be held on Wednesdays, with classes for students in grades three through five from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. for students in grades six through 8. In both instances, the students will be provided with creative and traditional opportunities to practice and develop their reading skills.
Session I for both levels will be April 23-May 7 and Session II is May 14-28. The fee each session is $20.
