Area high school juniors earn hands-on experience during Wallace State’s 3rd annual “InvesTECHgate” week

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Community College recently hosted approximately 600 high school juniors from Blount, Cullman and Morgan Counties during its third annual “InvesTECHgate” week. The event allowed students to get an in-depth look at technical programs they may be interested in pursuing one day at the collegiate level.
Before attending InvesTECHgate, students completed a survey at their respective high schools, helping them decipher which program was best tailored for their interests. High schools visiting campus were West Point, Good Hope, Fairview, Hanceville, Holly Pond, Vinemont, Cold Springs, Brewer, Falkville, Danville, Hayden, Locust Fork and J.B. Pennington. The event was extended to a record four days to accommodate the large gathering on campus.
InvesTECHgate participants were able to get hands-on experience in their chosen field, whether it was coloring hair extensions in the Wallace State Cosmetology Department, operating robots in the Automotive Manufacturing Technology Department or transplanting seedlings in Agriculture Production/Horticulture. Students were also able to choose among Wallace State’s Collision Repair, Automotive Service Technology, Aviation/Flight Technology, Culinary Arts, Diesel Mechanics, Engineering Technology, HVAC, Machine Tool Technology/CNC, Upholstery and Welding programs.
“You’ve got to be prepared to know what you want to do after college and this has helped me get an insight into that,” said Brewer junior Timothy Smith as he took a break from controlling a robot in the Automotive Manufacturing Technology Department. “I know this is a great program based off several Brewer graduates who have come here and had wonderful things to say about the college.”
Students in attendance were also advised on the college admissions process and financial aid and dual enrollment opportunities. The event was organized by Wallace State’s Career Coaches.
