No. 18 Wallace State volleyball splits four matches in season-opening tournament
HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s 18th-ranked volleyball team split four matches over the weekend, opening the season at the South Suburban Tournament in Wisconsin Dells, Wisc.
Wallace State (2-2) notched wins against Lincoln Land (Ill.) CC and Highland (Ill.) CC, sweeping both opponents. The Lions defeated Lincoln Land 25-18, 25-16, 25-23 and ended the tournament with a 25-14, 25-9, 25-12 victory over Highland.
The Lions lost to Kirkwood CC (17-25, 11-25, 22-25) and Indian Hills (19-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 10-15).
Wallace State sophomore Syretha Pride had a team-best 38 kills over the four-match span and added five blocks. Bethany Johnson contributed 31 kills, freshman Savanna Tidwell had 25 kills and 21 digs and BreAnna Thompson added 23 kills.
Kaci Kirk collected 58 assists and 10 digs for the Lions, Melissa-Paul Hill, a freshman from Hartselle, finished with 45 assists during her first collegiate matches and Alexandra Gamble added 35 assists.
Sarah Ellen Battles finished with 42 digs, Montana Clark contributed 37 digs and 19 kills and Sidney Cooper added 14 digs and nine kills.
Wallace State, the five-time defending state champion, continues its Midwest road trip Tuesday with a match at South Suburban College in South Holland, Ill.
