No. 18 Wallace State volleyball continues success during season-opening road trip, defeating a pair of Illinois colleges
HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s volleyball team, ranked 18th nationally in the NJCAA poll, continues to enjoy its Midwest road swing to open the 2014 season.
The Lions (4-2) collected victories in Illinois over South Suburban College and Kankakee College on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
After splitting a pair of matches in the South Suburban tournament last weekend, Wallace State remained in town and swept South Suburban in three games on Tuesday, prevailing 25-14, 25-21, 25-17 over the Bulldogs, the 14th-ranked team in the NJCAA Division II poll.
Syretha Pride, a sophomore middle hitter from Madison County High, finished with 12 kills and two blocks for Wallace State. Montana Clark contributed seven kills and 10 digs, Kaci Kirk collected a team-high 22 assists and added three digs and Sarah Ellen Battles, a freshman from Hartselle, accounted for 15 digs.
Alexandra Gamble added 11 assists and three digs to Wallace State’s attack, Bethany Johnson had 10 kills, BreAnna Thompson finished with seven kills and four digs, Melissa-Paul Hill contributed seven assists, Savanna Tidwell had five kills and five digs, Kheala Roberts added five kills and Olivia Walker pitched in with five digs.
Wallace State won its third consecutive match on Wednesday, beating Kankakee College 25-13, 24-26, 25-14, 25-20.
Gamble led Wallace State with 25 assists and two digs, while Kirk added 24 assists, three kills and two digs. Pride finished with 18 kills, four digs and two blocks, Thompson had 11 kills and Roberts had seven, Battles collected 25 digs, Tidwell added 14 kills and eight digs and Montana Clark contributed 11 digs and three kills.
Wallace State completes its season-opening road trip this weekend in Toledo, Ohio. The Lions play Oakland CC and Monroe CC, a pair of schools from Michigan, on Friday before competing in the Owens Community College Express Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
Wallace State plays its home and conference opener on Tuesday at 5 p.m. as the Lions host Southern Union in an Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) battle at Tom Drake Coliseum.
