Wallace State conducts initial Learning Communities event of semester, Alumni Association presents first Food Truck Grub Fest
HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Community College conducted the first Learning Communities event of the semester for its students last week at the James C. Bailey baseball stadium. Wallace State’s baseball and softball teams combined to play softball against each other, along with the Wallace State Pep Band providing entertainment.
A Wallace State Learning Community or “LC” is a group of students who participate in an organized, group-learning outside of the classroom. Students in a Learning Community share common experiences centered on their academics and community, achieving a deeper understanding of their course’s subject matter and also building relationships with one another. Learning Community opportunities throughout the academic year may also include viewing a film or listening to a guest speaker.
After the Learning Community event, Wallace State’s Alumni Association hosted a Food Truck Grub Fest in the baseball parking lot, allowing students, faculty and staff and the community to get a taste of the food truck craze. The Alumni Association also hosted food trucks on Wednesday, Aug. 27 in the Student Center parking lot, using the opportunity as a membership drive.
Dewey’s Cajun Shack, Luna’s BBQ, Jim ‘N Nick’s BBQ and Old Town Brick Oven Pizza had trucks on campus during the first day of the grub fest followed by Dewey’s and Johnny’s BBQ the following day.
“We were thrilled with the success we had with the food trucks. Everyone seemed excited and interested, and we had a great turnout. Even the food vendors mentioned how exciting it was to be on a college campus. They said being around college students created an new atmosphere they weren’t used to,” said Wallace State’s LaDonna Allen.
Musical entertainment was provided during the food truck fest by Wallace State students Joel Burks and Sarah Walker, known locally as “The Troupe.”
