Wallace State Students Recognized for Achievements at Annual Awards Ceremony
HANCEVILLE, AL—Students at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville were recognized for their achievements at the college’s recent Awards Night Ceremony. Awards for campus leadership, scholastic achievement, transfer scholarships, and division honors were among those presented at the ceremony.
“Congratulations to each and every one of you. You are so deserving,” said Wallace State President Dr. Vicki Karolewics. She went on to thank the family members in attendance and the Wallace State faculty “for making a difference in these students’ lives every day.”
The night’s top honor, the President’s Cup, went to Malik Elliott of Hartselle. This award is presented to the student who most completely demonstrates academic excellence, service to the college and community, leadership, courage, perseverance, and all those qualities that make a student well rounded.
Elliott is the Wallace State Singers Male Dance Captain, a member of the Wallace State Concert Choir and has starred in Wallace State Theatre performances of Shrek, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Into the Woods. He is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society and has maintained a 3.9 GPA while keeping up a strenuous schedule of performances, community engagements, and all the hours of rehearsal that go into that — up to 5 hours of rehearsal each day — all while working to support himself through college. “Though he has had some challenges during his young life he always maintains a positive attitude and finds joy in bringing joy to others through his performances,” wrote the instructor who nominated him. He will be attending the University of Montevallo this fall on musical theatre, Phi Theta Kappa and transfer scholarships.
