Wallace State baseball drops ACCC/Region 22 tournament opener to Wallace Community College-Dothan
HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s baseball team dropped its Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC)/Region 22 tournament opener at Ozark on Friday, losing 4-2 to Wallace Community College-Dothan.
Wallace-Dothan never trailed, scoring a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings at Eagle Stadium.
Wallace State-Hanceville starter Landon Hughes (7-5) struck out nine batters over 7 2/3 innings and allowed four runs.
Hughes was perfect until the fourth inning, racking up seven strikeouts over the opening three frames. Wallace-Dothan’s John Price broke up Hughes’ perfect outing with a two-out, infield single in the fourth, and Alex Gay followed with a two-run homer to right for a 2-0 lead.
Wallace State (24-23), the North Division’s sixth seed, cut into the deficit in the top of the fifth. Freshman Jon Sumner led off with a walk and came around to score on a Tanner Gardner safety squeeze, making it 2-1.
Wallace-Dothan (30-25) extended its lead to 4-1 in the sixth as the Governors added a pair of runs with one out.
Wallace State made it 4-2 in the seventh after Sumner drove in Turner Vincent with an RBI single. The Lions threatened for more, but had runners thrown out at second and home in the inning.
Wallace-Dothan’s Jacob Moye picked up his sixth save of the season with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. John Mason was the winning pitcher for the Governors.
Freshman Stephen Dobbs finished with three singles for Wallace State, which is making its 24th postseason appearance in 26 seasons under coach Randy Putman, a NJCAA Hall of Fame member.
Sumner finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and run scored for the Lions, Vincent was 1 for 4 with a run scored and Billy Reed and Lance Cleveland each added a single.
Wallace State will seek to keep its season alive on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., as the Lions play either Faulkner State or Marion Military in an elimination game.
