Wallace State has 10 student-athletes recognized by NJCAA for academic achievements

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State athletics had 10 players recognized Wednesday as National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Athletes of Distinction for their academic achievements.
Volleyball’s Kaci Kirk and Olivia Walker and softball’s Amanda Medders were each named Superior Academic Achievement honorees for earning a GPA between 3.80-3.99 during the 2014-15 academic year.
Exemplary Academic Achievement recipients (3.60-3.79 GPA) were men basketball’s Jacob Barrett and Xavier Mills, softball’s Andrea McKenzie and Rachel Ragland, baseball’s Oliver Francis, golf’s Will McDowell and volleyball’s Montana Clark.
On the field or court, Wallace State athletics produced three conference champions (volleyball, softball and golf) during the 2014-15 season and a pair of conference runner-ups (women’s basketball and baseball).

According to the NJCAA, it saw 58,531 student-athletes compete on 3,461 teams in 28 different sports during the 2014-15 academic year. Of those competitors, a record 3.31 percent – or a record 1,936 student-athletes from 324 NJCAA member colleges – were recognized with academic awards for their achievements in the classroom. Receiving the highest honors with a 4.0 grade-point average, 185 student-athletes received the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence. There were 741 qualifiers for the Superior Academic Achievement Award, while 1,110 individuals claimed the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award.
