Wallace State’s Student Support Services program to receive grant from U.S. Department of Education

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Community College has been selected to receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Education for its Student Support Services (SSS) program.
The grant is for a total of $286,808 for the first budget period and is anticipated to be for a total of five years.
“Wallace State is grateful for the support of Congressman Robert Aderholt, and we are delighted that we will continue to be able to serve the students in most need of supportive services to be successful college students,” said Wallace State President Dr. Vicki Karolewics. “The TRIO programs funded by the citizens’ tax dollars are essential to assuring success of first generation, academic and economically disadvantaged students, and they are good investments for our country and our community.”
The Wallace State Student Support Services program is designed to assist 200 eligible economically disadvantaged, first generation, academically unprepared students and/or those who with disabilities to successfully persist, achieve good standing, graduate and transfer to a four-year university.
Wallace State’s SSS program and highly qualified project staff provides educational, career and personal counseling through enhanced laboratory instruction in reading, English and mathematics; academic and career counseling in the individual and group seminars; peer tutoring conducted in a well-equipped academic tutorial laboratory; exposure to cultural opportunities and educational excursions; and four-year transfer counseling. All activities are designed to meet the overall purpose of the SSS program.
