Wallace State volleyball splits four matches in season-opening tournament

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s volleyball team split four matches over the weekend, opening the season at the South Suburban Tournament in Wisconsin Dells, Wisc.
Wallace State (2-2) notched wins against Iowa Lakes CC and Carl Sandburg College (Ill.). The Lions defeated Iowa Lakes 25-22, 25-12, 25-17 in their second match of the season and followed it a day later with a 21-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-10 victory over Carl Sandburg.
Wallace State lost to seventh-ranked Des Moines Area CC (20-25, 21-25, 24-26) in the tournament opener and 12th-ranked Indian Hills (19-25, 19-25, 17-25) in the finale.
Wallace State sophomore CeCe Hall had a team-best 46 kills over the four-match span and added 12 blocks. Freshman Kelsea Bivins, a Thompson graduate, finished with 45 kills and 17 digs. She had 19 digs in the Carl Sandburg win.
Freshman Cierra Davis contributed 39 kills, 22 digs and six blocks for the Lions and sophomore Kheala Roberts added 28 kills and six blocks.
Sophomore setter Alexandra Gamble, an ACCC all-tournament selection last season, collected 91 assists and nine digs for Wallace State, August Newberry had 44 digs during her first collegiate matches, sophomore Sidney Cooper had 12 digs and 10 kills and Tara Miller added 24 assists.
Wallace State, the six-time defending conference champion, continues its Midwest road trip Tuesday with a match at South Suburban College in South Holland, Ill.
