Wallace State Success Coaches host “Explore and Connect” event for freshmen

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s Career and Success Coaching Program hosted the first “Explore and Connect: A Goals, Planning and Success (GPS) Experience” event on this week, allowing the college’s freshmen to explore campus via a scavenger hunt and to engage with other students, faculty and staff through various games and activities.
Different campus clubs, organizations and departments, including Wallace State’s Student Government Association (SGA), the Lion’s Den Writing Club and the Success Coaches, had a presence at the event, which was located on the lawn in between the Bailey Center and the Student Center. Community members like Desperation Church and Chick-fil-A also had representatives on hand throughout the day.
Freshmen were given the opportunity to spend time navigating through a scavenger hunt around campus in hopes of learning more about Wallace State. Students were asked to update their progress through an Instagram hashtag and prizes were distributed to the winners.
Students also competed in games of cornhole and were able to ride a mechanical bull. Free drinks and cotton candy were also available.
“A lot of students were vocal about how appreciative they were the college hosted the event. It gave them a break from classes and allowed them to have fun and hopefully meet some new people on campus. Those who participated in the scavenger hunt learned things like the Wallace State Café is located in the School of Nursing and Center for Science building,” said Wallace State’s Christine Wiggins, the college’s Career, Success and Graduation Coach Coordinator. “It was important to give the students an opportunity to feel more comfortable on this campus. I’m already thinking of how to make the next event better.”
