Wallace State men’s basketball pushes winning streak to five games
HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Wallace State’s men’s basketball team continues to roll during the season’s opening month. The Lions (8-1) reeled off their fifth consecutive victory Monday night, edging Wallace Community College-Selma on the road, 57-53.
Marcus Barham posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Wallace State, and Kylen Butler scored 15 points, hours after earning recognition as the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Player of the Week.
Barham, a sophomore transfer from Eastern Florida State College, leads Wallace State with an average of 14 points per game, while Butler leads the conference with a 49 percent (25 of 51) shooting clip from behind the 3-point arc.
Wallace State charged out to a 30-20 halftime lead against the Patriots.
Sophomore point guard Xavier Mills scored seven points and dished out six assists for the Lions, Derylton Hill had six points and eight rebounds and Jaylen McCoy added six points.
Butler scored all 15 of his points courtesy of five 3-pointers, and the team was 11 of 22 from 3-point land.
Butler was named the ACCC Player of the Week for his work during Nov. 16-22. In two victories in the Dominican Republic, the sophomore from Illinois scored 30 points combined, hitting eight 3-pointers.
For Wallace-Selma, Freddie Smith had 12 points and Donevan Waldrop had 11.
Wallace State’s men host the Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Bash beginning Friday. The two-day tournament features both high school and collegiate teams. The Lions play South Georgia Technical College at 8 p.m. on Friday and North American University at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Wallace State’s women’s team dropped Monday’s opener to Wallace-Selma, 71-61.
The Lady Lions (1-6) are idle until Dec. 5, when they welcome Wallace-Selma to Tom Drake Coliseum for their home opener.
