Wallace State men’s golf finishes tournament runner-up at Stonebridge Invitational; WSCC softball sweeps conference DH

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s men’s golf team finished tournament runner-up Tuesday at the Stonebridge Invitational in Albany, Ga.
Visiting Albany for the second time in three weeks, the Lions put together their best finish of the spring, highlighted by Trey Hanvey shooting a 1-under par 215. The freshman from Fairview finished third, earning all-tournament honors by carding a 71-74-70.
Wallace State, which has won consecutive Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) championships under coach Dan York and 12 overall, now has a runner-up finish under its belt this spring after consecutive third-place finishes.
The Lions shot a 3-over par 291 during the opening round, earning the best score after the first 18 holes. They added a 302 in the second round, maintaining a one-stroke lead heading into the final day.
Wallace State shot a 297 in the final round, finishing with an 890 overall. The Lions finished five strokes behind Darton State College, the Invitational host.
Wallace State sophomore Sylas Elliott placed seventh, carding a 6-over 222 (74-73-75).
Eli Marty finished tied for 14th with a 226 (73-77-76) and Walker Gordon shot a 227 (73-78-76).
Wallace State hits the course again on March 27-29, traveling to Foley for the Glen Lake Invitational.
Wallace State softball opens ACCC play with DH sweep
Wallace State’s softball team opened ACCC action on the road Tuesday, sweeping the Southern Union Lady Bison.
Wallace State (21-17) pounded out 13 hits in a 10-1 victory in the opener and prevailed 7-5 in extra innings in the nightcap.
Sophomore Shelby Brown had one of her best performances in a Wallace State uniform in the opener, which the Lady Lions won in six innings. Brown, a Hueytown native, finished 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Four other Lady Lions had multiple hits. Molli Garcia went 3-for-5 with a double and run scored, Kayla Byrd went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, Taylor Beashers had a double among her two hits and an RBI and Katie Parr added two singles and two RBIs.
Freshman Brittany Ledbetter (9-4) went the distance in the opener, scattering a run on three hits in six innings. She walked three and recorded one strikeout.
In the second game of the twinbill, Wallace State plated a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, sending the Lady Lions to their 15th win in 17 games.
Amber Hammonds went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap for Wallace State, Karra Elam had an RBI double among her two hits,
Garcia finished with a pair of singles and Parr went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Beshears added an RBI single for Wallace State, while Sarah Ellen Battles and Erin Benson each added an RBI.
Ledbetter earned the victory in relief of Savannah Bolton. Ledbetter went two innings, allowing one run and striking out four.
Julia Dailey notched her first save with a scoreless eighth inning.
Wallace State travels to Calhoun on Thursday for a doubleheader.
Wallace State’s baseball team also plays a doubleheader at Calhoun on Thursday, opening ACCC play.
