Wallace State volleyball cruises to three ACCC wins at home; Women’s golf finishes runner-up in WSCC Invitational

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s volleyball team continues to roll in Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) action. The Lions notched three league victories in a two-day stretch this week, beating Southern Union and Gadsden State on Wednesday and Lawson State on Thursday at Tom Drake Coliseum.
After playing its first 17 matches on the road, Wallace State opened a home stretch Wednesday with a 25-18, 25-11, 25-12 win over Southern Union and followed with a 25-21, 25-11, 25-23 victory over Gadsden State.
The Lions (15-5, 6-0 ACCC) extended their conference winning streak to 48 consecutive matches behind a balanced attack against Lawson State (25-10, 25-18, 25-18) on Thursday.
“We were much more focused against Lawson State than we were on Wednesday, and Lawson State is much improved. We were very balanced and had a lot of players to perform well. We don’t have the talent where we can relax at any point. We have to fight,” said Wallace State coach Randy Daniel, “I’m looking for players to step up and take control of certain positions.”
Wallace State had five players finish with at least seven kills against Lawson State. Sophomore Kaylee Maddox finished with a team-high 15 kills and added 11 digs, Lexie Riggins had nine kills and five digs, Kati Thomas added seven kills and nine digs, Maya Jones contributed seven kills and Alex Wiggins finished with seven kills and eight digs.
Sophomore Abby Borden, an Arab grad, racked up 39 assists after entering the day fourth in assists in the NJCAA ranks and being named the ACCC Player of the Week.
Emily Wilson had 17 digs against the Cougars.
In Wednesday’s triumph over Southern Union, Borden finished with 31 assists and four digs, and Wilson racked up 23 digs.
Courtlyn Barber had 17 digs and four kills against the Bison, Riggins had nine kills, Maddox finished with eight digs and four kills, Jones added eight kills and Wiggins contributed seven digs and five kills.
Against Gadsden State, Barber had 12 kills and 12 digs, Riggins had 12 kills and three digs, Maddox finished with 12 digs and 10 kills, Borden collected 41 assists and six digs and Wilson finished with 21 digs. Jones had six kills and Wiggins added six digs.
Wallace State travels to Gadsden State on Wednesday for a conference match. The Lions return home on Thursday to host Bevill State and Wallace-Selma.
Wallace State women’s golf
Wallace State’s women’s golf team finished runner-up this week in its inaugural women’s Wallace State Fall Invitational at Cross Creek Golf Course.
Wallace State freshman Michaela Bryan was named to the All-Tournament team in her first collegiate tournament. Bryan shot an 8-over par 80 in the opening round and a 44 on the front nine on Tuesday before rain cut the tournament short.
The Lady Lions finished with a 503 as a group. Freed-Hardeman University won the tournament with a 473.
Annalee Stephens, last year’s ACCC tournament low medalist, and Dalys Mullican, both sophomores, each finished with a 126 for Wallace State. Anna Seahorn carded a 127 and Anna Williams a 135.
Calhoun, Snead State, Jeff State, Marion Military and Northeast Alabama Community College rounded out the inaugural tournament field.
The Lady Lions compete in Melbourne, Fla., this weekend.
