Wallace State volleyball closes season with 34-10 record; WSCC men’s basketball cruises at home
HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s volleyball team had its season end on Friday at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I national tournament, losing to Panola College (16-25, 14-25, 22-25) in Hutchinson, Kan.
Wallace State closed its season with a 34-10 record after making its ninth consecutive NJCAA national championship appearance and a conference-best 17th overall.
Sophomore Kaylee Maddox led the Lions’ in their final match of 2017, finishing with eight digs and seven kills. Abby Borden had 19 assists for Wallace State,
Emily Wilson finished with 16 digs, Lexie Riggins had six kills and Courtlyn Barber added five kills.
Kaitlyn Adams led Panola with 10 kills. Cayman Sutton had 19 assists.
Wallace State dropped its tournament opener to Miami Dade College, which went on to capture its second straight national championship and sixth overall.
It was the final match at Wallace State for Maddox, Borden, Wilson, Kati Thomas and Caroline Gann. They were a part of 72 wins and two conference championships during their two-year tenure, extending Wallace State’s streak to nine consecutive ACCC tournament championships and 10 straight regular season titles.
Borden, the conference leader is assists, was the 2017 ACCC Player of the Year, the NJCAA Player of the Week in October and earned ACCC Player of the Week status on three occasions.
Maddox led the conference in kills and was a 2nd-team All-ACCC/Region 22 and ACCC Tournament selection.
Wilson led the ACCC in digs and Riggins was the ACCC Tournament MVP and an All-ACCC/Region 22 first team for her regular season work.
Wallace State coach Randy Daniel surpassed the 400-win plateau with the Lions in October and has a 404-90 career record after 11 seasons.
Men’s Basketball
Wallace State 80, Martin Methodist JV 50
Four Wallace State players finished with double figures as the Lions had a big second half in a non-conference victory.
Chris Rollins led the Wallace State (4-1) charge with 17 points and eight rebounds, Jonathan Andre had 15 points and seven rebounds, John Payne poured in 13 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench and Deequan Fleming added 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Geordon Walker pitched in with seven points for Wallace State.
The Lions led 29-25 at halftime.
Both Wallace State basketball teams travel to Volunteer State on Tuesday.
