HANCEVILLE, ALA. –  Wallace State Community College will welcome attorney, child advocate and author Liz Huntley to campus on Tuesday, April 10, at 9:30 a.m. during a Learning Communities event.
Huntley’s upcoming visit is sponsored by the English Department, the Sigma Kappa Delta English Honor Society and Wallace State’s Learning Communities and open to the public. She’ll speak at the James C. Bailey Center Auditorium as also part of the college’s annual Arts in April festivities.
Huntley, practices law for Lightfoot, Franklin and White, LLC, in Birmingham, where she is highly involved in cases and legalities representing children.
Huntley is also a published author, penning her memoir, “More Than a Bird,” which describes the childhood challenges she experienced in life.
“We believe Liz Huntley is the perfect speaker to come to campus for Learning Communities and Arts in April. She has a lot to offer our students. We have students who often run into adversity during their time in college, and (Liz) Huntley certainly has overcome obstacles in her life,” said Wallace State English instructor Karen Morris. “Her legal work with children also fits well with our Child Development program, and as an author, she can share her talents to our English students and Sigma Kappa Delta. She’s been able to share her life in experiences in writing and that’s valuable.”
Huntley plans to sign copies of her book at the conclusion of the event.
Huntley was recently selected to the “This is Alabama” 2017 class of “Women Who Shape the State.” She earned her undergraduate degree from Auburn University, where she is now a member of the Auburn University Board of Trustees and her law degree from the Alabama School of Law, where she serves on the Law School Foundation Board of Directors.
Wallace State’s Learning Communities complement the college’s Pathways Project and each LC event corresponds to one or more of the four meta majors (STEM, Liberal Arts/General Studies, Applied Technologies and Health Sciences). Learning Communities events help students on their paths to success, introducing them to new ideas and experiences and assisting them with their goals.
Wallace State celebrates Arts in April each year with guest speakers, choir and band performances and multiple student activities on campus. The college also hosts a special event for Earth Day each April.
