Wallace State athletics: Tennis, No. 13 softball and women’s golf round-up

HANCEVILLE, ALA. — Wallace State’s tennis teams are off to strong starts in Alabama Community College Conference action, sweeping Marion Military Institute this week.
Both teams won 8-1 against the Tigers at home as the men remain undefeated after four matches.
Sebastian Arce (6-2, 6-0), Nick Hester (6-1, 6-0), Andrew Bizilia (6-0, 6-0), Zach Mastin (6-0, 6-1) and Will Brackin (6-0, 6-0) each notched singles victories for the men’s team. Wallace State had doubles victories from the duos of Arce and Brackin, Hester and Bizilia and Mastin and Ben Hicks.
Wallace State’s women also thrived against the Lady Tigers.
Mary Ann Wolfe, Emily Perry, Haley Putman, Kailee Upchurch and Crissy Cruz all earned singles victories. In doubles, Barron and Perry, Wolfe and Putman and Cruz and Upchurch prevailed.
Both teams continue conference action at Coastal Alabama-South on Friday. The teams host Blue Mountain College on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
Wallace State softball
Wallace State’s 13th-ranked softball team swept Coastal Alabama-North in its home opener on Tuesday and split a doubleheader against Itawamba (Miss.) Community College on Wednesday.
Against Coastal Alabama-North, Wallace State (18-3) won 8-3 and 4-2.
In the first game, freshman Addie Robinson and sophomores Morgan Weatherwax and Hannah Ingram each cranked home runs. Weatherwax’s homer was her first career blast.
Alysia Anderson added a two-run single for the Lions.
The Lions broke a 3-3 tie with a four-run fifth inning. Sophomore Meagan Schwieterman was the winning pitcher.
In the second game, Lauren Keplinger went the distance on the mound for the win. Sydney McKissick had a two-run triple and Kaley Anthony added a two-run double.
Against Itawamba, Wallace State dropped the first game, 5-2, in extra innings as the Indians put together a four-run eighth inning.
The Lions rebounded in the nightcap, winning 5-2. Sidney Edwards had a two-run homer in the win, and Keplinger was the winning pitcher.
Wallace State’s next doubleheader is at Columbia State on Tuesday.
Wallace State women’s golf
Maci Yeager earned All-Tournament status for Wallace State in this week’s Bishop State Mardi Gras Invite.
Yeager finished fifth overall as the Lady Lions finished tournament runner-up, playing with heavy hearts after the passing of long-time and Hall of Fame golf coach Dan York.
Wallace State’s Claire Newby finished 10th overall and Paige Lemm was 11th. Abbi Grimes rounded out the field for the Lady Lions.
Wallace State is back in action on March 12 at the Jeff State Tournament in Birmingham.
