June 1 deadline approaching to apply for Wallace State Health Science programs

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — The deadline to apply to most of the Health Science programs at Wallace State Community College is quickly approaching, with a June 1 deadline for applications. Most of the college’s Health Science programs accept new students for admission each fall through a competitive application process that began on March 1.

Each program sets minimum guidelines students should meet in order to apply to the program, with most – but not all – requiring a minimum ACT and GPA as well as completion of pre-requisite courses. All applicants must also for general admission to the college.

  • Child Development requires a GPA of at least 2.0, no minimum ACT is required
  • Dental Assisting requires a GPA of at least 2.3 and a minimum ACT of 16; pre-requisite courses should be completed before applying
  • Dental Hygiene requires a GPA of 2.5 and a minimum ACT of 18; pre-requisite courses should be completed before applying
  • Diagnostic Imaging requires a minimum ACT of 20; pre-requisite courses should be completed before applying
  • Diagnostic Medical Sonography requires a minimum GPA of 2.5 and a minimum ACT of 19; pre-requisite courses should be completed before applying
  • Emergency Medical Services requires the student be able to enroll in English 101 and Math 100 courses and a minimum ACT of 17
  • Health Information Technology requires GPA of 2.5 and minimum ACT of 17; pre-requisite courses should be completed before applying
  • Medical Assistant requires a 2.0 GPA and a minimum ACT of 17; no pre-requisite courses are required
  • Medical Laboratory Technician requires a 2.5 GPA and a minimum ACT of 18; pre-requisite courses should be completed before applying
  • Nursing requires a either a 2.0 or 2.5 GPA depending on student status (new, transfer, etc.), and a minimum ACT of 18; completing certain courses before applying will help improve point scores
  • Occupational Therapy Assistant requires a GPA of 2.5 and a minimum ACT of 20; pre-requisite courses should be completed before applying
  • Pharmacy Technology requires a GPA of 2.0, no minimum ACT is required; no pre-requisite courses are required
  • Physical Therapist Assistant requires a GPA of 2.5 and a minimum ACT of 18; ; pre-requisite courses should be completed before applying
  • Polysomnographic (Sleep Lab) Technologist requires a 2.0 GPA and a minimum ACT of 17; no pre-requisite courses are required
  • Respiratory Therapy requires a GPA of 2.5 and a minimum ACT of 18; pre-requisite courses should be completed before applying
  • Therapeutic Massage requires a 2.5 GPA and either a 17 on the ACT or 80 or higher on the reading section of the ACCUPLACER assessment.

Job opportunities are robust for health science graduates, and Wallace State programs have among the highest student success rates in the country.

Exceptions to the June 1 application deadline include the Child Development program, which accepts applications Aug. 1 through Nov. 1 for entry each spring. The next Nursing application deadline is July 15 for transfer and reinstatement students.

Those looking to complete pre-requisites are encouraged to enroll this summer. Some of those pre-requisite classes may be available during the two Flex Start terms from June3-July 1 and July 2-Aug. 1. Pell grants are now available year-round for those who qualify for financial aid, as more than half of students in Wallace State’s service area do.
