HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Adult Education students Darrell Williams and Clifton McCracken believe they have found their career paths while pursuing their GEDs (General Education Development) this semester.

Both Williams and McCracken spend four days a week learning from Wallace State’s Building Construction program as part of a partnership between the Adult Education and Workforce Training Solutions programs on campus.

Williams and McCracken, both Joppa natives, are cousins and decided to join Wallace State’s Adult Education program together. In addition to earning their GEDs at the end of the summer semester, they’ll also complete three classes in the Building Construction program – Basic Building Construction (BUC 110), Intro to Electricity (BUC 216) and Floors and Wall Framing (121).

“We were both sitting around and not doing much with our lives. We both left high school early. My girlfriend attends the CNA classes here, and she heard about the Building Construction program and encouraged us to look into it as we were working on our GEDs,” Williams, 20, said. “We’re thankful to have this opportunity through the Adult Education program. We love it.”

Once the three classes are completed, Williams and McCracken will each earn Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 and National Center for Construction and Education and Research (NCCER) certifications through the program.

“It’s important our program can aid the Adult Education program. These guys are working hard to earn their GED, and I’m glad to be a part of their journey,” said Lynn White, Wallace State’s Building Construction instructor.

In the Building Construction classes, Williams has enjoyed working on and brainstorming about different blueprints, while McCracken has embraced the OSHA aspects.

“These classes have been great. I’m learning a lot. I like all of the construction work and learning about safety. I’m hands-on and want to learn as much as I can. I would love to work with OSHA one day and make sure people know how certain things need to be fixed,” McCracken said.
