Wallace State’s basketball teams cruise past Volunteer State in season opener

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s basketball teams convincingly swept Volunteer State in their season openers on Friday night with both squads exploding for 96 points at Tom Drake Coliseum.

Wallace State’s 24th-ranked women opened the doubleheader with a 96-48 victory and the men followed with a 96-70 triumph, sending first-year coach Collin Dimitroff to his first career win.

In the women’s game, Wallace State sophomore Imari Martin poured in a career-high 32 points, pacing four Lady Lions in double figures for coach Jessica McBrayer.

Jiselle Woodson scored 16 points in her collegiate debut for Wallace State, sophomore Kyra Williams tallied 14 of her 16 points in the first half and Tawana Nevels added 10 points.

Wallace State rushed out a 14-2 lead less than two minutes into the game and stretched its cushion to 35-13 by the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Lions maintained a 56-21 advantage at the half. They led 77-30 after three quarters.

Ivy Fowler and Emrey McGill scored six points apiece off the bench for Wallace State.

Martin, a 2nd-team selection on the All-ACCC Region 22 and All-North Division teams as a freshman last season, scored 20 of her 32 points in the first half.

Men’s game

Wallace State 96, Volunteer State 70

Wallace State made sure Dimitroff’s coaching debut was a fun one as five players posted double digits.

Freshman Kuran Garner drilled five 3-pointers, finishing with 17 points for Wallace State (1-0), while McLeon Charles scored 16 points.

Eugene Leonard and Kendrick Foster scored 13 points apiece for the Lions and sophomore Markise Davis scored all 10 of his points in the first half.

Wallace State raced out to a 23-13 lead by the 12:06 mark in the first half. Garner later drained 3-pointers on consecutive possessions, giving the Lions a 32-15 margin.

Another Garner trey extended Wallace State’s advantage to 38-21 with 7:26 to go in the first half.

Wallace State led 56-31 at the break.

Both Wallace State teams host Cleveland State on Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m.
