Martin propels No. 24 Lady Lions past Northeast Mississippi; WSCC men fall to Tigers

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s basketball teams split a home doubleheader vs. Northeast Mississippi Community College on Thursday night.

Sophomore guard Imari Martin paced the way for the 24th-ranked Lady Lions, finishing with 29 points, nine rebounds and five assists in a 79-61 triumph, lifting the women to a fourth consecutive victory.

Martin, a Hazel Green grad, scored 19 of her 29 points in the first half. She drained five 3-pointers overall and went 8-of-9 from the free throw line.

Freshman Jiselle Woodson scored 14 points for Wallace State, Kyra Williams finished with 13 points and five rebounds and Tawana Nevels contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

Wallace State (9-2) led 20-11 at the end of the first quarter and pushed its cushion to as many as 18 points in the first half. Northeast Mississippi cut its deficit to single digits by the half as Wallace State sustained a 37-30 advantage.

Jessica McBrayer’s squad pulled away in the third quarter, limiting the Lady Tigers to only 11 points in the frame. Wallace State led 64-41 after three stanzas, sizing up its largest lead throughout.

The Lady Lions, who played their first game in 10 days, registered their second win over Northeast Mississippi this season.

Wallace State’s women travel to Chattahoochee Valley on Saturday.

Men’s game

Northeast Mississippi 77, Wallace State 58

Wallace State sophomore Markise Davis registered his third double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Juwan Johnson added 14 points for the Lions in Thursday’s second game.

Northeast Mississippi used a 13-6 run midway through the second half to break a 39-all tie and remain undefeated on the season.

Kendrick Foster added seven points off the bench for Wallace State, Jayden Landrom had six points and Kendall Cotner added six points and nine rebounds.

Wallace State (6-6) led 31-30 at halftime.
