Wallace State Alumni plans “Sound of Music” dinner theatre trip
HANCEVILLE, Ala. — The Wallace State Community College Alumni Association is planning a trip through the hills of Tennessee to see a production of “The Sound of Music” at Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre in Nashville. The June 25 excursion includes a matinee performance of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, luncheon and motorcoach transportation.
“We’ve taken several trips to Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre over the last couple of years and have had wonderful experiences each time,” said LaDonna Allen, WSCC Alumni Coordinator. “So, we decided to offer this trip to our Alumni members and the community to enjoy the wonderful food and entertainment we have experienced.”
Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre is one of only two remaining Barn Dinner Theatre’s in the United States. More than 25 Barn Dinner Theatres dotted the U.S. in its heyday. Back then, shows were cast in New York and the cast would travel from one Barn Dinner Theatre to another performing each show. In the early days, the cast also waited on tables before rushing to get ready for the show. The only other remaining Barn Dinner Theatre is The Barn in Greensboro, NC.
Chaffin’s Barn was owned and operated for 50 years by Chaffin family members John and Janie Chaffin until they retired a few years ago. Under new ownership, the Barn has maintained its original charm while making upgrades to the facilities, shows and buffet menu.
The motorcoach bus will leave from Wallace State at 8:30 a.m. and is scheduled to return at 6 p.m. The cost is $75 per person and includes transportation, luncheon and the show.
