WSCC athletics: Women’s basketball ends season as ACCC Tournament runner-up; baseball and softball updates

Wallace State's women's basketball team finished the season as the ACCC Tournament runner-up and with a 24-6 record.

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s women’s basketball team had its impressive season end over the weekend as the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Tournament runner-up.

The 19th-ranked Lady Lions fell to Shelton State, 90-69, in the championship game. Kyra Williams finished with a team-high 29 points, Imari Martin had 13 points, Jasmine Baker finished with 11 points and eight rebounds and Jiselle Woodson added 10 points.

Wallace State’s women’s team was nationally ranked for the majority of the season under coach Jessica McBrayer, closing the campaign with a 24-6 record. The Lady Lions surpassed the 20-win plateau for the eighth time in nine seasons and registered a pair of wins against Top 25 teams.

The Lady Lions had multiple individuals earn postseason recognition.

Martin, a Hazel Green grad, racked up a handful of awards. She was named the 2020 ACCC/Region Player of the Year, the ACCC North Division Player of the Year, an ACCC North Division First Team member and was selected to the ACCC All-Tournament team.

Martin led the conference in scoring, averaging 21.8 points per game, and in assists (147). She also drained 81 3-pointers. On Feb. 16, Martin surpassed the 1000-point mark with Wallace State, becoming the first Lady Lion to reach the milestone since the 2005-06 season.

Williams was an ACCC/Region 22 First Team and ACCC North Division First Team selection after finishing third in the conference in scoring (18.3 ppg). She was one of the team’s top 3-point shooters and averaged 4.7 rebounds.

Woodson was named to the ACCC North Division Second Team and was an All-Tournament selection. She scored a career-high 25 points in Wallace State’s ACCC Tournament quarterfinal win against Bishop State. Woodson averaged 12.5 points per game and shot 40.8 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Coach Jessica McBrayer was named ACCC North Division Co-Coach of the Year. It’s the second straight season McBrayer has earned the recognition. She has a 71-15 career record in three seasons with the Lady Lions.

Baseball splits DH against Calhoun

Wallace State’s baseball team opened ACCC action over the weekend, splitting a four-game series against Calhoun.

In Decatur, Wallace State (8-8, 2-2 ACCC) won 5-4 and lost 6-2. In the games at James C. Bailey Stadium, Wallace State won 10-9 and lost 15-3.

In the 5-4 victory, the Lions rallied to score three runs over the final two innings. Cooper Beck went 2-for-2 with three walks, a stolen base and a run scored, while Kevin Dowdell and Ty Hill each had multi-hit games. Jarren Wright had an RBI double, Colton Yeager singled and had two RBIs, and Brennan McCullough singled and scored. Bradly Hulin added an RBI and a stolen base.

Lefty sophomore Jacob Smith threw a complete game, striking out nine and allowing four runs.

In the 6-2 loss, McCullough had a double and an RBI, and Beck had a single and an RBI. Hill and David Rutledge each scored a run. Wright and Hulin each had a single.

In the 10-9 triumph, Wright finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Hulin had a pair of hits, including a double, and scored twice, and Breydon Edmondson had two singles and two RBIs.

McCullough contributed a single, two RBIs and scored twice, and Nicho Jordan finished with a single and scored two runs. Beck and Hill each added a single.

Dowdell picked up the win in relief, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Lions continue conference play on Thursday, hosting Central Alabama at James C. Bailey Stadium at 2 p.m.

Wallace State softball sweeps Coastal Alabama-North

Wallace State’s softball team has won five consecutive games after sweeping Coastal Alabama-North on March 6. The Lions earned wins of 7-1 and 10-2.

In the opener, Addie Robinson was 2-for-3 with a double, stolen base and a run scored, and Callie Ryan had a double and three RBIs. Katie Wood had a pinch-hit RBI double, Andrea Harbin went 1-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, Brantly Bonds had a single and an RBI, and Abigail Beech and Jordan McMeans each added a single. Ty Wilson scored two runs and had a stolen base.

Lily Calvert was the winning pitcher in relief, allowing a lone run over four innings.

In the second game, the Lions pounded out 11 more hits.

Wilson finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two steals, Harbin was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Kalli Cartee went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Olivia Ball singled and had two RBIs. Robinson and Riley McWaters each went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Katelyn Williams had an RBI double off the bench, and Bonds contributed a sac fly.

Josie Thompson earned the win for the Lions. She went four innings, allowing two runs.

Wallace State hosts Columbia State on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
