Wallace State’s Small Farmer Training program offering online agriculture/horticulture classes this fall

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Community College’s Career and Workforce Development program is offering an online extension of Small Farmer Training classes during the Fall 2020 semester.

Travis Kress, Wallace State’s Small Farmer Training Manager, will teach each class through Zoom on Tuesdays from 5:30-7 p.m.

Gardening continues to grow in popularity and is among the outdoor activities and hobbies many individuals have adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kress is a fifth-generation farmer, and through each class, helps participants appreciate the benefits of growing one’s produce: including saving money, eating healthy, relieving stress, staying active and enjoying the satisfaction of the end products.

Classes offered this fall are:

Aug. 25 – Winterizing: Garden Cover Crops

Sept. 15 – Plant Nutrients

Sept. 29 – Gardening Basics

Oct. 13 – Introduction to Soils

Oct. 27 – Marketing for Small Farms

Nov. 10 – Soil Testing

Dec. 1 – Managing Organic Manner

Dec. 8 – Pesticide Usage & Safety for Home Gardens

“These classes will give individuals a preview of what the Small Farmer Training program offers. I’ve pulled out certain topics, so we’re hoping this encourages those interested to enroll in our live classes later,” Kress said. “We believe these online classes are convenient and will allow more people to register. We’ve even had people say they’ll call in and listen to the classes.”

Each class is $15.
