Wallace State’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society earns Hallmark Award for Distinguished College Project; Two students awarded scholarships
HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Community College’s Alpha Chi Tau chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society has earned a 2020 national Hallmark Award, one of the highest awards attainable each year, and two Wallace State students have earned PTK-sponsored scholarships.
Wallace State’s chapter hosted a middle school math tournament at Tom Drake Coliseum last October as the annual PTK Distinguished College Project and the efforts earned the Hallmark Award recognition. The event, co-sponsored by the Cullman Rotary Club, welcomed 24 middle schools from North Alabama to campus. Each team participated in a series of math questions, completing both a written test and ciphering exercises.
“This is a huge milestone for our chapter. It’s an award we’ve worked hard to pursue, so we’re excited to be recognized,” said Wallace State math instructor and PTK co-sponsor Brandon Smith.
Math instructor and department chair Stacey Sivley also serves as a PTK sponsor.
The Hallmark Awards Program recognizes superior achievement in Phi Theta Kappa’s programs while encouraging excellence, reflecting fairness, recognizing quality and enhancing individual and chapter development.
Additionally, Wallace State students Alexis Williams and Gunnar Hulebak have earned scholarships through the organization.
Williams is one of 207 PTK members to be named a 2020 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar, receiving a $1,000 scholarship. The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new PTK members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in Society programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service, and leadership potential. Nearly 700 applications were received.
Hulebak has been selected as a 2020 Trustmark Workforce Development Scholar and will receive a $200 scholarship. This scholarship is designed to assist active PTK members in navigating the transition from college to the workforce, and scholarship recipients may use their scholarship to pay for certification exams, tools, or equipment needed for the workforce entry.
Wallace State’s PTK Honor Society inducts new student members with an evening reception during each fall and spring semester. Wallace State students are eligible for consideration if they maintain a 3.5 GPA for 12 or more credit hours the previous semester. Wallace State’s Alpha Chi Tau Chapter of PTK is also a 5-star achiever.
Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,285 chapters on two year and community college campuses in all 50 states and in Canada, Germany, Peru and other select republics or territories. More than 2.5 million students have been inducted into Phi Theta Kappa since its founding in 1918, with approximately 135,000 students inducted annually.
