HANCEVILLE, ALA. –  Imari Martin was recognized over the weekend as the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) Community College Athlete of the Year, marking the second consecutive year a Wallace State athlete has earned the award.

Martin, who was honored at the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) headquarters in Montgomery, had a stellar sophomore campaign for the Wallace State women’s basketball team during the 2019-2020 season, leading the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) in scoring with 21.8 points per game and assists (147).

Martin, a 5-foot-5 guard from Hazel Green, drained 81 3-pointers and became the first Wallace State women’s basketball player to surpass the 1,000-point milestone in 14 years. She finished her two-year WSCC career with 1,086 career points, guiding the Lady Lions to a 24-6 record last season and securing their first NJCAA Division I National Championship berth since 2015.

Among her other postseason accolades, Martin became the first NJCAA Division I 1st-team All-American in program history and was named the 2020 ACCC/Region 22 Player of the Year, the ACCC North Division Player of the Year, an ACCC North Division First Team member and an ACCC All-Tournament selection.

Martin, who’s now playing for Jacksonville State, is the fifth student-athlete in Wallace State history to earn the ASWA Community College Athlete of the Year, joining Demarkus Lampley (2019), Rachel Ragland (2015), Jennifer Sexton (2008) and Cory Cooperwood (2007).
